With many parts of the world still in lockdown, most families have found themselves having to spend a large chunk of their time indoors to observe social distancing. However, staying indoors does not necessarily mean that you and your family need to be glued to the couch watching TV shows or surfing on the internet all day. With everyone staying at home, there is also more opportunity for families to bond. Parents are even finding more creative ways to spend time with their kids through fun STEAM activities
. Staying at home does not have to be boring. Here are five fun activities that families can do
together. For families with kids, check out these activities which are designed to boost child development as well.
1. PLAY BOARD GAMES
While there exist many types of indoor games, board games come highly recommended since they can bring tons of fun and laughter to family fun activities. One way to make board games more exciting is for you to organize a family game night which everyone in the family can enjoy. A game night is a great way to bring out the inner child of the adults playing, and kids will absolutely love it as well. Consider playing popular board games, such as Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary, or Monopoly. When you’re not playing board games, use your free time to build a family game collection that you can use anytime. Everyone in the family can then take turns choosing the board games to play for game nights. If you’re looking for something else to play other than board games, you can also check out Charades
, Jenga, PlayStation, or even Wii. Backyard games such as playing catch or basketball are good options as well. You will be able to have fun while exercising at the same time!
2. ORGANIZE AN ARTS & CRAFTS DAY
Art is a great way to develop a child’s imagination
and creativity. Organizing an arts and crafts day in your home is a great way to get your kids hooked on STEAM activities
from an early age. The good news is that anyone can get crafty regardless of their age. The first thing you need to do is to choose where you will have your craft activity. You can clear your kitchen table or set a space in your backyard or garage. Make sure that nothing will distract your kids once you start your arts & crafts activity. You don’t have to rack your brain too much to find a suitable arts and crafts exercise. You can do activities such as making homemade slime
, dreamcatchers or even simple seashell bracelets. Come up with fun creations and how your kids can use them once you are done. You could choose to put them on display or let your kids use them. The most important aspect of getting crafty is that the family gets to bond while also learning about the importance of art
3. COOK TOGETHER
Cooking is another great activity that families can enjoy together. Spend your extra time teaching your kids how to prepare easy meals or snacks. Cooking is not only a fun activity, but it can also present you with a unique chance to build your family’s healthy eating habits. For example, instead of rushing to grab sugary snacks sold on supermarket shelves, why not try preparing a homemade pizza? Kids will love kneading the dough and putting toppings such as ham or mushrooms on the pizza! If you want to make your pizza healthier, you can even use wholemeal organic flour! You don’t have to limit yourself to pizza. There are lots of easy recipes that you can do with your kids. Try downloading a recipe app to get some ideas for your next cooking session.
4. PLAN A TREASURE HUNT
If there’s one thing children can’t resist, it is a scavenger hunt
! Depending on the amount of space you have at your disposal, parents can plant treasures and dime-store jewels in the backyard for a fun scavenger hunt activity. Once the ‘treasures are hidden’, all you have to do is give your kids a treasure map to start them off on their hunt. Try pouring some coffee on your map and burning the edges to give it an aged effect. Keep in mind not to hide the items too much. You don’t want your kids to end up crying because the treasures are too hard to find!
5. TRY GARDENING
Gardening is a fun activity that can bring a family together. It gives everyone in the family the chance to put down their phones and talk to each other while they garden. Children can learn a lot from growing things. They can learn to love nature, become more responsible as they take care of plants and be more physically active. Since you will be working with gardening tools, make sure to have the necessary safety measures in place. Choose gardening tools that are child-friendly. Make sure that everyone is wearing a hat and sunscreen. Do not use harmful chemicals as well. Try to use organic materials when gardening.
